anti-intellectualism and draws sustenance from the self-serving politics of M Karunanidhithe chief minister of Tamil Nadu The Ninth World Tamil Conference which was planned to be organised by the International Association of Tamil Research (IATR)a well-known global body of eminent Tamil scholarshad been gracelessly usurped by Karunanidhi to showcase his supposed love for Tamil and Tamils In 1968when the first DMK government headed by the late CN Annadurai made the Second International Tamil Conference a popular political event with a historical pageant and a cultural exhibitionthere was indeed a reason for that The DMK had just come to power following a highly charged agitation against Hindi as the national language of India an agitation which was suppressed by the Congress government using the notorious provisions of the Defence of India Rules The popular participation in the conference was massive And the academic sessions were exemplary Thusthe conference was a reaffirmation of the DMKs commitment to Tamil Four decades laterTamil language is no longer viewed by the Tamils as a beleaguered language in need of political defence Insteadthere is a deep sense of self-confidence which marks both the language and its users The field of cultural production in Tamil Nadu has been bubbling with new energy during the past two decades Avant garde magazinesthe proliferation of publishing housesan expanded reading publicglobally informed debatesand books which both in their content and design can compete with the best in the worldare all hallmarks of the new self-confident Tamil cultural public As much as other language writings are translated into TamilTamil literary and other writings are translated into other languages and showcased nationally and internationally Along with thatthe old perception that Hindi is a threat to Tamil has by and large vanished Every Tamil knows that Hindi is a lost cause even in the Hindi heartland Even the prophets of Hindu-Hindi-Hindustan are vigorously courting Tamil in an effort to gain a foothold in the state In this changed contextthe DMKs celebration of the so-called classical status conferred on Tamil by the Union government is somewhat ludicrous The average Tamilian no longer seeks outside authorisation about his language or its antiquity It is just taken for granted In factKarunanidhi is belittling the self-confidence of the language by making a show of an inconsequential decision by the Union government Despite its irrelevancethe Classical Tamil Conference has its uses for Karunanidhi His constant boastthat he is the leader of world Tamilsis in tatters after his dubious role in not stopping the massacre of the Sri Lankan Tamils last year The DMK hadafter passing three unanimous resolutions in the state assembly seeking the Union government to ensure a ceasefire in Sri Lankareversed its policy to please the Congress (I) Its decision to stick with the Congress was motivated by its sole desire to cling on to power in the state Given this politics of rank opportunismKarunanidhis dominant image today among the international Tamil community is one of a self-serving traitor The World Classical Tamil Conference is a desperate attempt by Karunanidhi to reinvent himself once again as the guardian of Tamil and Tamils His narcissism is writ all over the conference Self-obsessed as he isa substantial part of his inaugural speech to the conference was about himself and his so-called love for Tamil from his childhood The flood of newspaper advertisements on the conference attempts to produce an equivalence between him and the ancient Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar The academic sessionswhich are going to be intellectually enervatinghave no less than 20 papers on Karunanidhi and five on his daughter Kanimozhi If Karunanidhi has claimed that about 5000 scholars from all over India are participating in the conferencehe has his own standards of scholarship In choosing the well-known Sri Lankan Tamil scholar Kartigesu Sivathambywith his open sympathies for the Sri Lankan Tamil cause as the intellectual mascot of the conferenceKarunanidhi is making an attempt to mend his battered image among the Tamil diaspora ImportantlySivathambywho came to attend the International Tamil Conference held in Thanajavur in 1995was deported at the instruction of the then AIADMK Yemen’s strongman the master of shifting alliances playing both sides — or flipping sides freely — in the multiple guerrilla conflicts and civil wars that tore apart his impoverished nation throughout his life But his last switch proved his end Saleh who was Yemen’s president for 33 years until he stepped down in 2012 amid an Arab Spring uprising was killed Monday by the Shiite rebels known as Houthis whom he’d once allied with in hopes of a return to power but then turned against in recent months A video circulating online showed Saleh’s body his eyes open but glassy motionless blood staining his shirt and a gaping wound in his head He was being carried in a blanket by rebel fighters chanting "God is great" who then dump him into a pickup truck His grisly end recalled that of his contemporary Libya’s Moammar Gadhafi whose body was shown being abused by the rebels who killed him in that country’s 2011 civil war During his rule Saleh was known as the man who "dances on the heads of snakes" for his ability to manipulate friends and enemies alike using patronage family bonds and brute force That skill enabled him to stay on top in the Arab world’s poorest nation and one of its most unstable where tribal and regional alliances and the sheer geography of mountains and deserts made central rule weak But the decades of manipulation corruption and conflict under Saleh left Yemen underdeveloped and dangerously fragile Now the civil war in large part caused by his manoeuvring has pushed it to near societal collapse: With hospitals and food distribution networks in a shambles hunger is widespread among its population of nearly 28 million and it faces a ferociously fast-spreading cholera outbreak In the 2000’s Saleh was a vital ally of the United States in fighting Al-Qaeda’s branch in his country a top priority for Washington after the branch tried to blow up a passenger jet an carry out other attacks on American soil Even while taking millions in US aid Saleh was suspected of striking deals with the militants and enlisting them to fight his battles Officials in his ally Saudi Arabia fumed privately to American diplomats that he was "corrupt unreliable and largely ineffective" then rushed to help him fight civil wars and domestic conflicts because they needed him During one of those wars a leaked US diplomatic memo suggested that Saleh tried to trick Saudi Arabia into killing his own military commander/ally/rival Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar by calling in a "mistaken" Saudi airstrike on his home Saudi Arabia realised what the target was and called off the strike After a popular uprising against his rule erupted in 2011 Saleh cannily managed to hang onto power for months even surviving a bomb that detonated in the presidential palace mosque as he prayed there severely burning him Still he stayed on only finally resigning in early 2012 under a Saudi-brokered deal As president Saleh fought multiple wars against the Houthi rebels in their heartland in northern Yemen each time failing to crush them completely Then after his fall he allied with the Houthis against his own former vice president and successor Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi — likely in hopes he could ride them back into power Saleh’s loyalist military units helped the Houthis overrun the capital Sanaa and much of the north and center of the country Hadi fled his government moved to the southern city of Aden and Saudi Arabia and its allies launched a coalition air campaign in early 2015 Then in recent months Saleh’s alliance with the Houthis fell apart as the rebels moved to weaken him and Saleh flirted with switching to side with the Saudi-led coalition Saleh rose to power in an era when Yemen was divided into two nations north and south He was born into a small tribe allied with one of the country’s mightiest clans al-Ahmar He did not stay long in school leaving before he was a teenager and enlisting in the armed forces His age wasn’t known for sure His website gives his birth date as 21 March 1946 but many in Yemen say he was born four years earlier On the other hand he just happened to be 40 when he took power in 1978 — when the constitution said the president had to be 40 And in the 2006 election official statements alternated between saying he was 64 or 65 Whatever his age Saleh was ambitious and soon caught the eye of North Yemen’s president Ahmed bin Hussein al-Ghashmi who appointed him military chief in the city of Taiz south of Sanaa Saleh’s moment came after a bomb in a briefcase killed al-Ghashmi in June 1978 Within a month Saleh was North Yemen’s president backed by Saudi Arabia Among his first acts was to order the execution of 30 officers — some his former friends — convicted of being conspirators in al-Ghashmi’s assassination His reputation cemented as a tough leader he also knew how to play Cold War politics Marxist South Yemen was a Soviet client state so Saleh reached out to Western leaders to leverage aid for North Yemen File image of Ali Abdullah Saleh AP In 1990 with the Soviet Union unravelling Saleh negotiated unity with the south ensuring his place as the president On 22 May 1990 he raised the flag of the Republic of Yemen at the southern port of Aden Four years later he crushed an attempt by the south to break free His powerful nexus of the military and tribes made him virtually untouchable He also sought to harness a dangerous new force in the country Arab militants who had fought the Soviets in Afghanistan in the 1980s needed a new home and the deal apparently offered by Saleh was sanctuary in exchange for respecting his authority In 2000 that legacy came back to haunt him when the Navy destroyer USS Cole was bombed in Aden harbour killing 17 American sailors Washington demanded Saleh to crack down on suspected Islamic militants Saleh’s efforts against extremist groups were widely criticised as spotty and ineffective In 2006 a band of Al-Qaeda militants made a bold escape from a Sanaa prison that US and Yemeni officials believed had help from regime insiders The band went on to form Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula the terror network’s Yemen branch The group was linked to the attempt to bomb a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas Day 2009 and a shipment of explosive-rigged packages intercepted in Britain and Dubai in 2010 Still the US saw little choice but to partner with him Saleh’s tribal and political allies were growing impatient complaining that he was ignoring widespread poverty and that corruption was undermining development Most disturbing to them he was centralising power in his and his family’s hands He put his sons and nephews in command of his strongest security units He appeared to be grooming his son Ahmed commander of the elite Republic Guard to succeed him When a popular uprising broke out against him in 2011 he responded with token promises of reform then bloody attacks on the protesters He faced a stream of defections from his party lawmakers Cabinet members tribal allies and military units Still he managed to cling to power then negotiate an exit deal that not only protected him from arrest and prosecution and let him stay in the country but kept many of his loyalists in place in the military That made Saleh a player in the civil war between the Houthis and Hadi But the Houthis succeeded in weakening him in recent months reducing their alliance on him In the hours after his death many of the Saleh loyalist units were reportedly pulling back from their positions in Sanaa South Africa coach Russell Domingo did not sound too worried about the indifferent form shown so far on the tour by Test captain Hashim Amla even if the opening Test of the four-match contest is just round the corner “Amla is a quality player We know a big knock from him is round the corner He’s batting well in the nets” said Domingo in his post-match press conference at the Brabourne Stadium after the drawn two-day practice encounter against Indian cricket Board President’s XI File picture of Hashim Amla AFP Amla was dismissed for 1 by Board President’s XI medium pacer Shardul Thakur on Saturday morning caught edging to the slip cordon Amla who has scored 6770 runs in 84 Tests with 23 hundreds to his credit — four of which had been made in six previous matches in India — and having a healthy career average of 52-plus has had a poor run on this tour that started with the T20 series against the hosts His sequence of scores have been 36 and 21 in the completed T20 Internationals 37 17 5 7 and 23 in the five ODIs followed by his lowest score on Saturday South Africa’s best batsman and in-form ODI captain AB de Villiers scored a superb 112 off 131 balls with 18 hits to the fence and Domingo said he was easing back into the Test mindset after missing the tour to Bangladesh “AB (de Villiers) last played a Test match in January against the West Indies and missed the Bangladesh tour That’s why he was leaving a few balls (without attacking them)” said Domingo about de Villiers’ ton his fourth on the tour after his triple in the 3-2 ODI series victory On the composition of the team’s spin attack in the first Test starting at Mohali next week Domingo said it will depend on the conditions of the pitch laid out for the game “We have been hearing about a spin-friendly surface being prepared We will look at the conditions and then decide There are a few options Imran Tahir is an attacking option as he’s an aggressive bowler” he said On the injury status of fast bowler Morne Morkel who bowled only five overs without conceding a run here the visiting team’s coach said there would be a fitness test for the lanky bowler “closer to the commencement of the Test match” On Jean Paul Duminy the coach said that the batting all-rounder was scheduled to have the stitches taken out of the webbing of his right hand next week “The stitches would be removed next week but the hand would be a bit tender” he said hinting that Duminy may not be fit to play the game The coach was happy with the way wicket-keeper Dane Vilas who was not part of the limited overs squad batted in the company of de Villiers and put on a century stand for the seventh wicket while making 58 in 108 minutes studded with seven fours “Dane Vilas was very good He had kept well in Bangladesh too He’s a good player of spin” said Domingo He expected India to come hard at the visitors after losing both the T20 and ODI series against South Africa “They are a formidable side in their conditions They must be hurting at the defeats in T20 and ODI series We know they are going to be a tough challenge” he said PTI Head of the Department of Spine Surgery at Sancheti hospital here, Westworld After Person Of Interest, The television series
