The burglary occurred Friday morning while Liz and Daniel Bermudez were at work. With a popular security app known as “Ring,” a video camera inside the doorbell recorded a man calmly strolling out of the front door; carrying expensive handbags and other stolen items including watches, jewelry, and most distressing of all, Liz’s wedding rings. The couple who moved into the house just six months ago believed the intruder may have entered through a small window in the living room. The thief apparently ransacked the couple’s bedroom, cleaning out jewelry boxes, taking handbags from the closet, and breaking into a safe which held valuable papers. Most alarmingly, two handguns with their magazines were also among the items stolen from the safe“The guns are out there with somebody that is doing this in broad daylight. Now, he’s armed. Now he’s got two guns on him,” Daniel said, after immediately contacting the police. The couple showed us the outline of a hand still visible on a window screen, but he left no fingerprints behind because the man was wearing gloves. Two security cameras connected to a Cox Homelife monitoring system were also stolen. Daniel said he called Cox and was told that the system appeared to stop working around the time of the burglary. In the doorbell video, an SUV which resembles a Ford Expedition is visible in the background as the thief leaves the house. The car initially backs up and then speeds away.“With getting my story out there and people watching it, I have a great feeling that something good is going to come out of this and hopefully, that’s catching him,” Liz said.
June 14, 2019 Updated: 12:31 PM KUSI Newsroom, VISTA (KUSI) – Ex-NFL tight end Kellen Winslow II, who was convicted of forcible rape and misdemeanor indecent exposure and lewd conduct counts earlier this week, will be retried on charges involving two other alleged victims on which jurors deadlocked, prosecutors announced Friday.Jury selection is tentatively set for Sept. 30 at the Vista courthouse, with opening statements and testimony expected Oct. 7 in Winslow’s retrial on eight felony and misdemeanor counts, including forcible rape and kidnapping.Following about a week of deliberations, jurors found Winslow guilty of raping a woman in Encinitas and exposing himself to two others. The panelists indicated that they were leaning toward guilty verdicts on each count on which they were ultimately unable to reach a consensus, leading San Diego Superior Court Judge Blaine Bowman to declare a mistrial on those counts Tuesday morning.Winslow was convicted of raping a 58-year-old homeless woman — Jane Doe 2 — last May, exposing himself the same month to Jane Doe 3, who was gardening in her front yard in Cardiff, and touching himself in front of a 77- year-old woman — Jane Doe 5 — at a Carlsbad gym in February. He faces nine years in prison on those three counts. The 35-year-old son of former San Diego Chargers legend Kellen Winslow was acquitted of masturbating in front of Jane Doe 5 on a separate occasion. The jury was unable to reach consensus on rape and kidnapping charges involving a 54-year-old hitchhiker allegedly targeted last March in Encinitas, and a 17-year-old girl who was allegedly raped in 2003 at a Scripps Ranch house party.Winslow was initially charged last summer with raping Jane Doe 1 and 2 in Encinitas in early 2018, as well as exposing himself to Jane Doe 3 in her yard. Following his highly publicized arrest, Jane Doe 4 subsequently came forward to allege that he raped her in 2003 at a home in Scripps Ranch, when she was 17 and he was 19.Earlier this year, while Winslow was out on bail, he was arrested for exposing himself to Jane Doe 5 at a Carlsbad gym. Bail was revoked following his arrest in that case.At a hearing Friday morning, defense attorney Brian Watkins unsuccessfully argued Friday that Winslow should be released on $1 million bail, as the charge on which he was acquitted was the basis for revoking his bail earlier this year. But the judge ruled that Winslow will remain held without bail because he’s facing time in prison, making him a flight risk and “a substantial danger to the community.”Winslow is due back in court on Aug. 14 for a hearing on pretrial motions. In his closing argument last week, Deputy District Attorney Dan Owens told the jury that Winslow “took from these women what he wanted. Kellen Winslow took from these women again and again and again. This man took what he wanted from them and threw them away like trash because that’s what he thought of them.”Owens said none of the five women knew each other, yet their accounts yielded common details and similar physical descriptions of the suspect.Winslow’s attorneys, Marc Carlos and Brian Watkins, told the jury that the charged incidents were either consensual sex or never occurred at all.Winslow II grew up in San Diego and attended Patrick Henry and Scripps Ranch high schools before heading to the University of Miami. He played for four NFL teams between 2004 and 2013.RELATED STORY: Jury finds Kellen Winslow II guilty on multiple charges including rape KUSI Newsroom Categories: Local San Diego News FacebookTwitter Posted: June 14, 2019 Prosecuters to retry ex-NFL tight end Kellen Winslow II
Close The highly anticipated John Lewis Christmas advert for 2015 has been unveiled, featuring a young girl who strikes up a relationship with elderly man living on his own on the moon. The story of the ad sees a young girl named Lily and her attempts to wish the man a merry Christmas, finally succeeding by sending him her telescope tied to a bunch of balloons, ending with the strapline: Show someone theyre loved this Christmas. As is tradition for John Lewis, the ad is accompanied by a cover version of a well-known but non-festive song. This year, the Oasis track Half The World Away is performed by the 19-year-old Norwegian artist Aurora and becomes the first-non British artist to be featured in a John Lewis Christmas advert. The ad itself cost around £1m ($1.5m) to make, less than the £7m spent on last years ad featuring Monty the Penguin, but the retailer is estimated to be spending a further £6m on television slots. The ad will get its debut broadcast during first break of Channel 4s Gogglebox on 6 November.John Lewis teamed up with Age UK as part of a campaign to remind people about those who may be alone this festive period. The retailer will be supporting the charity throughout November and December with initiatives such as text-to-donate campaigns online and in their stores and through the sales of selected Christmas merchandise.John Lewis customer director Craig Inglis said: Our Christmas advert is once again all about going the extra mile to give someone the perfect gift. This year though, the story is told in a uniquely creative and engaging way as we see Lily, our heroine, go to great lengths to connect with the Man On The Moon.We hope it inspires people to find really special gifts for their loved ones and through our partnership with Age UK, raises awareness of the issue of loneliness amongst older people, and encourages others to support in any way they can.Over the past few years, the typically heart-wrenching John Lewis advert has become as synonymous with Christmas as Slade, the Snowman and possibly Jesus. According to research released by MindMover on the day the ad was released, John Lewis is now the brand people most associate with Christmas, ahead of Coca-Cola and Marks and Spencer.
AL general secretary Obaidul QuaderRuling Bangladesh Awami League (AL) general secretary Obaidul Quader has said a working committee meeting of the party would discuss both the letters of chief justice Surendra Kumar Sinha this evening, Saturday.“We need to discuss both the letters [leave letter and letter to newsmen]. We’ve invited the law minister, Anisul Huq, who unequivocally said the chief justice was sick and sought the leave on health grounds, to the meeting,” Quader told reporters after attending a reception programme at the Viqarunnisa Noon School and College in the capital. Also the road transport and bridges minister, Quader went on to say, “We will take a decision in this regard in today’s working committee meeting.”The AL working committee meeting will be held with prime minister and AL president Sheikh Hasina in the chair at Ganabhaban this evening. While leaving his Hare Road residence for the airport to catch an Australia-bound flight on Friday night, chief justice Surendra Kumar Sinha dismissed reports of his ill health saying he is “”completely in good health”.He also told newsmen that he was going abroad temporarily to save the judiciary from blemish and will return shortly for the “sake of the country’s judiciary”.In the letter handed out to waiting newsmen at the main entrance of his official residence, Sinha said that he is embarrassed at the criticism levelled at him by the prime minister, ministers, and political leadership over a verdict.Earlier on 2 October, law and parliamentary affairs minister Anisul Huq claimed that chief justice Sinha applied for one month’s leave as he was suffering from different types of illness including cancer.Sinha along with his wife flew for Australia by a Singapore Airlines flight at 11:55pm Friday night. He left his residence around 10:00pm.
The confirmation hearings of President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Judge Neil Gorsuch, began with Senate Judiciary Republicans praising his qualifications and legal philosophy.“His grasp on the separation of powers — including judicial independence –enlivens his body of work,” committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said of the federal appeals court judge during his opening remarks on Monday.Democrats, however, wanted to talk about the man they believed should have been sitting there instead: former President Barack Obama’s nominee, Judge Merrick Garland, who was denied a hearing by Senate Republicans during an election year. Garland and Gorsuch were nominated to replace Justice Antonin Scalia, who passed away suddenly in February 2016.“I am deeply disappointed that it is under these circumstances that we begin these hearings,” said Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.She went on to say that Democrats would give Gorsuch a courtesy that Senate Republicans did not give Garland: a fair hearing.“Our job is to determine whether Judge Gorsuch is a reasonable mainstream conservative or is he not,” Feinstein continued. She then outlined her concerns with some of Gorsuch’s past writings that hinted he opposed Roe v. Wade, calling the case a “super precedent” that legalized abortion and gave women a right to privacy. The outset of the first day of testimony underscored that the hearings would remain sharply divided along party lines, with each senator accusing the opposing side of political posturing.Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, argued that the Senate owes a president discretion in picking his judicial nominees and pointed out that Gorsuch had received the highest rating possible from the American Bar Association, the “gold standard” in vetting judicial nominees.Hatch blasted Democrats for wanting Gorsuch to outline how he would vote on certain cases, saying that to them, “judicial independence requires he be beholden to them and [their] political agenda” on issues like abortion.Other Republicans argued that Gorsuch should be judged on his own merits, legal writings and decisions — not compared to the man who nominated him.Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., said, “The nominee before us today is not President Trump,” nor is he Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell or Judge Garland.Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., joked that he was certainly no fan of Trump during the campaign and made the case that Republicans didn’t blockade Gorsuch’s nomination to allow Trump to make a nomination because most of them didn’t believe Trump would win last November.“If you believe this has been a great plan to get a Trump nominee on the court, then you had to believe Trump was going to win to begin with,” said Graham. The South Carolina Republican pointed out that he had voted to confirm President Obama’s two Supreme Court nominees, Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, because they were qualified for the bench and not because he agreed with their politics. Graham urged his Democratic colleagues to give Gorsuch the same deference.“I’m dying to hear someone over there tell me why [Gorsuch] is not qualified to be sitting here,” Graham said.Texas Sen. Ted Cruz claimed in his comments that Gorsuch’s nomination carried with it a “super legitimacy” because Trump made the Supreme Court vacancy a major campaign issue.Still, Democrats devoted many of their opening statements to push back against the so-called Republican obstructionism that they believe caused Scalia’s seat to remain vacant for more than a year.“The Judiciary Committee once stood against a court-packing scheme that would have eroded judicial independence. That was a proud moment. Now, Republicans on this committee are guilty of their own ‘court un-packing scheme,’ ” said Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt. “The blockade of Chief Judge Merrick Garland was never grounded in principle or precedent.”Gorsuch will give his own opening statement Monday afternoon, and answer committee members’ questions on Tuesday.Copyright 2017 NPR.
