Holmwood Technical High, the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association rural senior champions, will be seeking their eighth all-island title today when the 2015 season comes to an end today with the national finals at Clarendon Park in May Pen. Action starts at 1 p.m. with the junior final between Denbigh and Gaynstead. The senior final will follow between Holmwood and Camperdown, the urban champions. It should be an epic encounter between seven-time Holmwood and Camperdown. Holmwood will start favourites after they scored a one-sided win over Titchfield High in the rural finals. Camperdown, on the other hand, were pushed to extra-time by St Hugh’s. Both coaches are upbeat going into today’s encounter. “We do not expect anything less than a victory,” Holmwood’s coach, Carlene Graham-Powell, said. She added: “Our girls play hard every time they take the court, and I expect another good game from them, and I have no doubt that they will be victorious today.” Goal shooter Tracyann Francis of Holmwood was outstanding in the rural senior final and will be a key player for Holmwood today. A majority of the Camperdown players have been playing together for the past five years and four have represented the country at the junior level. Coach Wayne Stewart thinks this is a plus for his team. “We did not see Holmwood on Tuesday … but our girls are ready for the occasion. They have played together for a number of years and have gelled well, and we are confident that Camperdown will win their first all-island title,” Stewart said. Goal shooter Idara McCarthy and goal attack Ramona Lawrence will be key players for Camperdown. Denbigh will be appearing in the junior final for a third straight final, and after losing back to back to Queen’s, they will be hoping to win against first-time finalists Gaynstead. “Our team is a very young one … but I expect them to win and make up for their disappointment in the past two years where they lost to Queen’s,” said Janice Walker, coach of Denbigh. Sports coordinator Derrick Brown of Gaynstead is also looking forward to a victory for his girls. “The girls are very confident and I have no doubt in my mind that they will win. As long as they stay focused and follow instructions, they should go all the way,” said Brown.
It’s advice I’ve heard myself multiple times throughout my life: Get a haircut.I must have heard this tough-love approach to parenting from my mother and father hundreds of times while I was a young man, particularly when I was about to embark on the journey of responsible adulthood. This age-old caveat, along with other gems such as, ‘Dress for the job you want, not the one you have,’ and, ‘Give a firm handshake and look people in the eyes,” were passed down to me by my parents, and their …
With the impending launch of the Apple iPad, the Cupertino-based company’s shunning of Adobe Flash technology has been brought to the forefront of technological discussions. While it was one thing to forgo Flash on a small, mobile device such as the iPhone or iPod Touch, some are questioning whether lack of Flash support is going to be a make-it-or-break it feature for the new slate devices arriving next month – devices which, if you believe Apple CEO Steve Jobs – are “better than netbooks.” On the flip side, Apple supporters echo the company’s sentiments that “Flash is a CPU hog” and including support for the technology in Apple’s mobile line-up would negatively impact battery life. However, recent tests have put Flash up against HTML5, the new web markup language that eliminates the need for the Adobe plugin. The results of these tests show that this is not a simple black-and-white issue. Is Flash really a CPU hog? Yes, in some cases. But, surprisingly, not all the time. In fact, sometimes HTML5 actually performed worse.Testing Flash and HTML5Jan Ozer is an expert in video encoding technologies, has worked in digital video since 1990 and is the author of 13 books related to the subject [Editor’s Note: some people have pointed out that Ozer has done seminars and written books featuring Adobe products, so therefore he makes money from the success of Adobe Flash. We don’t think that has any effect on the test outcomes, but we thought it was worth updating the post to note it.] Recently, he put HTML5 up against Flash in a series of tests that pitted the two technologies against each other on both the Mac and PC and in different web browsers including Internet Explorer 8, Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Mozilla Firefox. The results of the tests in their entirety are published here on StreamingLearningCenter.com. The summary in a nutshell? Flash isn’t always a CPU hog, sometimes that honor goes to HTML5. Some of the highlights of Ozer’s findings are below, broken up into both Mac and Windows test results. Mac Tests Tags:#Adobe#Analysis#Apple#mobile#NYT#Video Services#web sarah perez What it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … With Safari, HTML5 was the most efficient and consumed less CPU than Flash using only 12.39% CPU. With Flash 10.0, CPU utilization was at 37.41% and with Flash 10.1, it dropped to 32.07%With Google Chrome, Flash and HTML5 were both equally inefficient (both are around 50%)With Firefox, Flash was only slightly less efficient than in Safari, but better than in ChromeWindows Tests Related Posts Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces Safari wouldn’t play HTML5 videos, so there was no way to test that. However, Flash 10.0 used 23.22% CPU but Flash 10.1 only used 7.43% CPUGoogle Chrome was more efficient on Windows than Mac. Playback with Flash Player 10.0 was about 24% more efficient than HTML5, while Flash Player 10.1 was 58% more efficient than HTML5.On Firefox, Flash 10.1 dropped CPU utilization to 6% from 22% in Flash 10.0In IE8, Flash 10.0 used 22.41% CPU and Flash 10.1 used 14.62% CPUHardware Acceleration Key to Flash PerformanceIn analyzing the results of the tests, Ozer determined that the key to better Flash performance was dependent upon whether or not it could access hardware acceleration. This feature, launched in Flash 10.1, allows the plugin to use the graphics processing unit (GPU) on some computers to decode video. Depending on the video card and drivers, (NVIDIA, AMD/ATI and Intel offer products that support this), the video decoding process in Flash 10.1 can now work for all video playback, not just full-screen playback as was available in Flash 10.0. According to Adobe, hardware acceleration is not supported under either Linux or Mac OS X, the latter because Mac OS X does not expose access to the required APIs. Adobe goes on to say “The Flash Player team will continue to evaluate adding hardware acceleration to Linux and Mac OS X in future releases.” Here’s what this all means in layman’s terms: Apple isn’t allowing Flash to become more efficient on their Mac OS X/Safari platform (or their iPod/iPhone/iPad one, either) by not providing the access to the hardware it needs to reduce its CPU load. Adobe is waiting and watching to see if they do, but, as Ozer says “the ball is in Apple’s court.”Will Apple budge? At this point, it’s unlikely. In blocking Flash on Apple devices, the company can easily claim that it’s simply not an efficient technology…and that’s true for now, considering how it’s set up. But if the company wanted to allow it and make it work, it seems reasonable to believe that they could. This is what leads some insiders to believe that the decision to block Flash is less of a technological one and more of a business-minded one. After all, if you could easily visit Hulu.com to stream TV shows and movies, then why would you need to buy them from the iTunes Store? So while Flash’s “CPU hogging” may be a contributing factor in Apple’s decision to not support the technology on their mobile devices, that’s probably not the only reason behind the block.Thank you to Dan Rayburn, who pointed us to Jan Ozer’s article. The body of a 65-year-old woman from Rajasthan’s Barmer district, who died in Pakistan last week during her visit to her relatives, was brought back to India via the Khokhrapar-Munabao zero point road route on Tuesday. The Pakistan Rangers handed over the body to the Border Security Force at the India-Pakistan border. The deceased, Reshma, a resident of Agasadi village in Barmer district, went to Pakistan’s Sindh province along with her son Sahib Khan on June 30 to meet her sisters. She fell ill there a few days before she was scheduled to board the Thar Express connecting the two countries and died on July 25, a day before her visa was to expire. The Indian High Commission in Islamabad swung into action after External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj asked it through a tweet to help out Reshma’s family members who had submitted a memorandum. Though a prompt action was launched with the help of Pakistan government officials to facilitate repatriation of the body, it could not be brought by the Thar Express because of delay in legal formalities.BSF help soughtBarmer Collector Shivprasad Nakate said he took up the issue with the BSF to allow Reshma’s son to enter India along with the body through the road route parallel to the Thar Express’ railway line. The body arrived at the international border near Pakistan’s Khokhrapar zero point railway station and was handed over to the BSF after the gates at the fencing were opened. The body was first sent in an ambulance to Munabao for the immigration formalities and was later transported to Agasadi village, where Reshma’s four daughters and other relatives were waiting for it.The Khokhrapar-Munabao road route was utilised for the first time on Tuesday after the revival of rail link between India and Pakistan through the Thar Express in February 2006. A fortnight before the train started, former External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh, along with an 85-member delegation, had gone to Pakistan via this road to visit the ancient temple of Hinglaj and other shrines in Sindh and Balochistan. The rail link at Munabao was revived after a gap of 41 years.
Kevin Pietersen scored a double ton helping England to a commanding 474/8 despite Praveen Kumar’s fiver on the second day of the first Test against India at Lord’s on Friday. Watch KP’s 200 and MSD bowl | Score At stumps, India were 17/0 in 6 overs with openers Gautam Gambhir and Abhinav Mukund at the crease.Though KP’s ton and Praveen Kumar’s five-wicket haul were the highlight of the day, it was India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who managed to grab the maximum eyeballs. And it wasn’t his keeping, but his bowling that hit the limelight – yes, the India skipper, and one of the most successful wicketkeepers that India has produced, bowled on the day.Soon after the lunch when a few overs were left for the new ball to be taken, Dhoni pulled off his gloves and took to bowling to fill the void left by Zaheer Khan, who pulled his hamstring on Thursday. The change also saw Rahul Dravid keeping wickets. And Dhoni could have sent Pietersen back into the pavilion if the DRS hadn’t ruled otherwise. On-field umpire Billy Bowden had given him out when the ball seemed to have nicked off his bat on to the keeper Rahul Dravid. But the reviews ruled against it and Pietersen went on to complete his ton.England started with the overnight score of 127/2 with Pietersen and Jonathan Trott in the middle. The clear and sunny sky aided the batsmen as the ball seemed to come on to the bat unlike Day 1 when the ball was swinging a lot more with the nip in the air following the morning showers.advertisementJonathan Trott and Kevin Pietersen were going strongly against India and the duo had put on 98 runs for the third wicket when Praveen Kumar struck. And it was the swing, albeit only a little, that did the trick. The ball kept low moved in and struck against Trott’s pads. He fell for 70 and India got the crucial third wicket on 160.Post Trott’s dismissal, Pietersen took up the challenge and went ahead consolidating the innings. At lunch England were cruising at 217/3 with Pietersen and Ian Bell in the middle. The second session saw Kumar strike again and this was post Dhoni’s cameo with the ball and Pietersen’s 18th Test ton.Kumar couldn’t get Pietersen, but he got rid of his partner Ian Bell with a ball that took the edge of his bat to land in keeper Dhoni’s gloves behind the stumps at 270/4. Bell scored 45.But Kumar’s over was far from over and two balls later he got England’s fifth wicket with new man Eoin Morgan walking back on a duck. From 270/3 England were down to 270/5, but they still had a good batsman in Matt Prior. At tea, England were sitting pretty on 305/5 with Pietersen and Matt Prior at the crease. The third session too was dominated by Pietersen even though Prior scored a fine 71 before going down to Kumar, who finished with a five-wicket haul with Stuart Broad being his last victim on the day.Kumar did take up the challenge in the absence of senior pro Zaheer Khan and claimed his maiden five-wicket haul at Lord’s, yet the Indians were missing their pace-spearhead.No wonder it had prompted ‘Captain Courageous’ to shun his gloves and take to bowling.

Robert Kennedy Publishing parent Canusa declared bankruptcy in June 2013 and AIM bought the three brands in cash through an auction process that kicked off in July. Andrew Clurman, AIM’s president and chief operating officer, says the company has been quietly building up its health and fitness division, anchored by its Yoga Journal and Vegetarian Times brands. “We track everyone who’s in our competitive neighborhood and we’ve been aware of and kept an eye on Clean Eating and Oxygen,” says Clurman. “We were impressed with the newsstand and subscription sales, both have been growing—the right way, not through artificial means.”Oxygen is currently at about 125,000 subscribers, with an additional 60,000 in newsstand sales. Clean Eating has 140,000 subscribers with another 80,000 sold at retail. And MuscleMag has about 50,000 readers with 32,000 subscribers and 18,000 single-copy sales.Prior to this deal, AIM’s healthy living group also included martial arts title Black Belt, Muscle & Performance, Better Nutrition, Amazing Wellness and The Box, a magazine for enthusiasts of the CrossFit style of exercise. Amazing Wellness and Muscle & Performance are both custom published for and distributed through The Vitamin Shoppe. The deal is characterized by a particularly traditional media framework, but Clurman says AIM’s approach has been to launch, or buy, a magazine and then surround it with a diversified platform. Prior to the acquisition, 42 percent of AIM’s revenues were advertising sourced (print and digital), with the rest coming from events, services and book and product sales. “This [deal] will increase our print advertising quotient, but our goal is to then diversify around these brands,” says Clurman. Most of the existing staff from the Kennedy titles were displaced as a result of the bankruptcy, but AIM is working with a firm in Toronto to restart the business and move some of the staff to the U.S. Oxygen and MuscleMag International will be moved to AIM’s California office, while Clean Eating will start operating out of the Boulder office. Enthusiast publisher Active Interest Media has acquired three titles from Robert Kennedy Publishing, based in Ontario, Canada. Included in the cash deal are women’s health and fitness title Oxygen, recipe and nutrition magazine Clean Eating and MuscleMag International.
