Washington DC: Scientists, using NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), have observed water molecules moving around the dayside of the Moon, the US space agency said, an advance that could help us learn about accessibility of water that can be used by humans in future lunar missions. Measuerments from the Lyman Alpha Mapping Project (LAMP) instrument aboard the LRO of the sparse layer of molecules temporarily stuck to the surface helped characterise lunar hydration changes over the course of a day, according to the study published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. Also Read – Imran Khan arrives in China, to meet Prez Xi JinpingUp until the last decade, scientists thought the Moon was arid, with any water existing mainly as pockets of ice in permanently shaded craters near the poles. More recently, scientists have identified surface water in sparse populations of molecules bound to the lunar soil, or regolith, NASA said in a statement. The amount and locations vary based on the time of day. This water is more common at higher latitudes and tends to hop around as the surface heats up. Also Read – US blacklists 28 Chinese entities over abuses in XinjiangThese results aid in understanding the lunar water cycle and will ultimately help us learn about accessibility of water that can be used by humans in future missions to the Moon, said Amanda Hendrix, a senior scientist at the Planetary Science Institute. Lunar water can potentially be used by humans to make fuel or to use for radiation shielding or thermal management; if these materials do not need to be launched from Earth, that makes these future missions more affordable, Hendrix said in a statement. Water molecules remain tightly bound to the regolith until surface temperatures peak near lunar noon. Molecules thermally desorb and can bounce to a nearby location that is cold enough for the molecule to stick or populate the Moon’s extremely tenuous atmosphere or exosphere, until temperatures drop and the molecules return to the surface, the US space agency said. Michael Poston from Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in Texas, US, had previously conducted extensive experiments with water and lunar samples collected by the Apollo missions. The latest research revealed the amount of energy needed to remove water molecules from lunar materials, helping scientists understand how water is bound to surface materials. Lunar hydration is tricky to measure from orbit, due to the complex way that light reflects off of the lunar surface, said Poston, who is now a research scientist on the LAMP team,. “Previous research reported quantities of hopping water molecules that were too large to explain with known physical processes. I’m excited about these latest results because the amount of water interpreted here is consistent with what lab measurements indicate is possible,” he said. Scientists have hypothesised that hydrogen ions in the solar wind may be the source of most of the Moon’s surface water. When the Moon passes behind the Earth and is shielded from the solar wind, the water spigot should essentially turn off, they noted. However, the water observed by LAMP does not decrease when the Moon is shielded by the Earth and the region influenced by its magnetic field, suggesting water builds up over time, rather than raining down directly from the solar wind.
Houston: Scientists have used artificial intelligence (AI) to uncover two more hidden planets in the data collected by the Kepler space telescope. The technique shows promise for identifying many additional planets that traditional methods could not catch. Researchers from The University of Texas at Austin in the US created an algorithm that sifts through the data taken by Kepler to ferret out signals that were missed by traditional planet-hunting methods. Also Read – Swiggy now in 500 Indian cities, targets 100 more this year The process, described in the The Astronomical Journal, should help astronomers find many more missed planets hiding in Kepler data. “K2 data is more challenging to work with because the spacecraft is moving around all the time,” said Andrew Vanderburg, from UT Austin. This change came about after a mechanical failure. While mission planners found a workaround, the spacecraft was left with a wobble that AI had to take into account. Also Read – New HP Pavilion x360 notebook with in-built Alexa in India The Kepler and K2 missions have already discovered thousands of planets around other stars, with an equal number of candidates awaiting confirmation. The two planets are both very typical of planets found in K2, researchers said. “They’re really close in to their host star, they have short orbital periods, and they’re hot. They are slightly larger than Earth,” said Anne Dattilo, who led the study. Of the two planets, one is called K2-293b and orbits a star 1,300 light-years away in the constellation Aquarius. The other, K2-294b, orbits a star 1,230 light-years away, also located in Aquarius. Once the team used their algorithm to find these planets, they followed up by studying the host stars using ground-based telescopes to confirm that the planets are real. These observations were done with the 1.5-metre telescope at the Smithsonian Institution’s Whipple Observatory in Arizona and the Gillett Telescope at Gemini Observatory in Hawaii. The future of the AI concept for finding planets hidden in data sets looks bright. The current algorithm can be used to probe the entire K2 data set, Dattilo said — approximately 300,000 stars. The method couls also be applied to Kepler’s successor planet-hunting mission, TESS, which launched in April 2018. Kepler’s mission ended later that year.

Mike Henry, has signaled his intention to get Jamaica re-elected to the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Jamaica, through the Maritime Authority of Jamaica (MAJ), is seeking to regain a seat in Category ‘C’ of the prestigious governing body of the IMO in December. In his remarks, read by his Senior Advisor, Bindley Sangster, at the MAJ’s recent 16th anniversary awards ceremony, the Minister pointed out that he had, on three prior occasions, successfully led the team to winning a seat on the Council between 2007 and 2011. He said the Government is keen on Jamaica retaining its status as the leading maritime state in the Caribbean, a standing that has been recognized not only by the IMO but also other Small Island Developing States (SIDS), which are maritime countries with similar sustainable development challenges, and the UN’s Least Developed Countries (LDCs).The Minister pointed out that the SIDS and LDCs look to Jamaica for leadership and representation at the IMO and elsewhere. He said the Government is serious about the development aspects of the Authority’s role to facilitate critically important maritime investments, which are clearly outlined in the MAJ’s commissioned study. They will help to create jobs and make Jamaica an envied shipping centre in the Caribbean. The study also shows Jamaica’s potential for maritime investments, such as bunkering, crewing and dry-docking.In 2010, the MAJ commissioned a study called Development of a Framework for Positioning Jamaica as a Shipping Hub, with funding support from the Commonwealth Secretariat. The Minister commended the Authority for a stellar job as the regulatory face for Jamaica’s maritime good order and development over the past 16 years. “You represent Jamaica admirably in the regional and international space, bringing much credit and recognition to the country, and helping to build our profile as a credible maritime state,” he said.Release: JIS Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp

The burglary occurred Friday morning while Liz and Daniel Bermudez were at work. With a popular security app known as “Ring,” a video camera inside the doorbell recorded a man calmly strolling out of the front door; carrying expensive handbags and other stolen items including watches, jewelry, and most distressing of all, Liz’s wedding rings. The couple who moved into the house just six months ago believed the intruder may have entered through a small window in the living room. The thief apparently ransacked the couple’s bedroom, cleaning out jewelry boxes, taking handbags from the closet, and breaking into a safe which held valuable papers. Most alarmingly, two handguns with their magazines were also among the items stolen from the safe“The guns are out there with somebody that is doing this in broad daylight. Now, he’s armed. Now he’s got two guns on him,” Daniel said, after immediately contacting the police. The couple showed us the outline of a hand still visible on a window screen, but he left no fingerprints behind because the man was wearing gloves. Two security cameras connected to a Cox Homelife monitoring system were also stolen. Daniel said he called Cox and was told that the system appeared to stop working around the time of the burglary. In the doorbell video, an SUV which resembles a Ford Expedition is visible in the background as the thief leaves the house. The car initially backs up and then speeds away.“With getting my story out there and people watching it, I have a great feeling that something good is going to come out of this and hopefully, that’s catching him,” Liz said.

Further, Facebook lost its prominence by July 2012 as the top downloaded social app, falling to the third spot behind Instagram and Twitter (as measured across Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Korea, United Kingdom, and the U.S.).For the full report, click here. A new report conducted by app store analytics firm Distimo finds that the United States is the most “socially savvy” country by virtue of its download volume of social apps. According to Distimo, out of the most popular apps downloaded, 20 percent of the volume is apps from Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and the like. In countries in Europe and South East Asia, social app download volume doesn’t exceed 10 percent. These findings are part of a larger look at how social media app downloads compare to other apps. As an example, the report finds that while download volume among the 100 most popular apps in Apple’s App Store increased 43 percent over the last two years, the top 100 social applications increased 193 percent between July 2010 and July 2012.

Budget airline SpiceJet got temporary reprieve when the government reportedly gave a 10-day extension on a deadline to pay 194 crore to the Airports Authority of India. AAI. The company was supposed to pay the amount by Monday. SpiceJet (Credit: Reuters)ReutersThe cash-strapped airline sought the extension on Monday at a meeting attended by Sanjiv Kapoor, its chief operating officer and SL Narayanan, the chief financial officer of its parent Sun Group, with Minister of State for Civil Aviation Mahesh Sharma and aviation regulator. SpiceJet’s executives told the government that the airline could fold “tonight or in 30 days,” unless the Centre allowed the airline to continue flying, without having to pay oil firms and aviation authorities in advance, reported The Times of India.Sharma said, “SpiceJet has requested for relief. We will discuss within the ministry and put whatever decision emerges before seniors in the Government. This will be done in the interest of passengers. No commitment or assurance has been given to SpiceJet.” reported BusinessLine.Recapitalization PlanOn Monday, SpiceJet was to submit a recapitalization plan on how it seeks to continue operations and also a timeline on when the creditors are to be paid. However, the plan submitted to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had no new development. There was also no mention of roping in investors to infuse fresh capital. The beleaguered airline needs 1,400 crore capital infusion immediately, followed by 600 crore later, if it has to continue flying. The airline faced a deadline on Monday to pay the AAI an outstanding sum of 194 crore, else to pay upfront or usage of facilities, starting from Tuesday. On Tuesday, the airline scrip was trading at 11.75, down 1.80 or 13.65% at 10.38 am.
Chief Justice of India Ranjan GogoiIANSIn a shocking development, a 35-year-old woman has raised the complaint that the Supreme Court of India Chief Justice, Ranjan Gogoi, sexually harassed her. The woman, a former junior court assistant, wrote a letter to 22 judges of the apex court levelling the charges. She alleged that Gogoi made sexual passes at her twice during October last year. Meanwhile, the Secretary General of the Supreme Court of India denied the allegations, saying it was “completely and absolutely false and scurrilous”.”Its is also very possible that there are mischevious forces behind all this, with an intention to malign the institution,” the office said in a email in reply to queries on the issue, the Scroll reported.Narrating her ordeal, the woman says in her complaint that she was transferred from the CJI’s residence office after the sexual harassment incident. In a shocking turn of events, the employee was dismissed from service on December 1 on grounds that she had taken a single-day casual leave without approval. If the statements in the woman’s sworn affidavit are to be believed, the events that ensued after the top judge’s alleged misbehaviour were predatory. After the woman was dismissed, her husband, a head constable with the Delhi police, was suspended from service on December 28. His brother, also a head constable with the Delhi police, was suspended as well, the complaint says. The victim, who worked as a junior court assistant, detailed the harassment in an affidavit sent to all judges of the supreme court on April 19.The supreme court Secretary General’s office, in a written reply to media queries, however, narrated a different account of the happenings. One pertinent paragraph goes thus:”The motive behind these false and scurrilous allegations is obviously mischevious. As referred to in your letter, there is a criminal case pending against her, where very serious allegation have been made, of her having taken a bribe to assure employment in the Supreme Court of India. It has been learnt that there is an application for the cancellation of bail earlier granted to her, which is listed for hearing on 20.04.2019 on acoount of her having made threats to the complainant of the said case.”The victim’s own account, which the 22 judges of the supreme court are reviewing, differs drastically and offers a blow by blow account of the events from her point of view. The woman says her work had earned the praise of the chief justice and she was given invitations to high-profile functions. She says everything changed when she rebuffed the physical advances of Gogoi in October. The Caravan has reported that the woman has also submitted evidence including video recordings as part of her complaint. This pertains to the incident in which a police official accompanied her to the CJI’s residence after she was fired from the service. She says that she was made to apologise to the CJI’s wife at this point. The Secreatry General’s letter says that there have been “complaints made against her by the secretariat of the Chief Justice of India, to the Secretary General on account of her inappropriate behavior,”. It says this resulted in her transfer out of the home office of the CJI. “Apart from the misconduct formally recorded in the complaint by the secretariat, there were other counts of misconduct on her part.”However, the letter doesn’t give details of her alleged misdeeds. “It appears that these false allegations are being made asa pressure tactics to somehow come out of the various proceedings which have been initiated in law, against her and her family, for their on wrong doings. Its is also very possible that there are mischevious forces behind all this, with an intention to malign the institution,” the letter says. The woman says in her complaint that her last resort was writing to the supreme court judges. “It is only when the victimisation has reached unbearable proportions when me and my family were taken into police custody and tortured, and now there is imminent danger to my life that I am compelled to speak the whole truth, in order to save myself and my family,” she says.”I have been victimised for resisting and refusing the unwanted sexual advances of the CJI and my entire family has also been victimised and harassed due to that.”

COPY LINKAD Loading … BJP National General Secretary Ram MadhavIANSRam Madhav, the National General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Patry, has defended Prime Minister Modi’s comments on the presence of clouds during the Balakot airstrike and his advice to experts on how clouds can help the Indian Air Force jets escape Pakistan’s radars. In a Facebook post, Madhav called out everyone who became an expert on radars and said that he consulted with “a real expert, a senior most professor and top nano-technologist” in the country and gave his point of view on what the prime minister had said. It is interesting to note that Madhav did not name the expert but said that he can be trusted and is non-political.The expert had said, “In the last few days, there has been some discussion on PM’s comment on whether fighter aircraft can avoid detection by radars in the presence of clouds. People, even some military personnel, are ignorantly arguing that radars are immune to weather conditions. The right question to be asked is: do weather conditions degrade radar performance? The answer is YES.”The anonymous expert went on to explain, “Military surveillance radars typically operate in S band (2 – 4 GHz) frequency band to achieve the best of accuracy and range. As the frequency increases beyond this range, it is good for accuracy but the signal attenuation will increase affecting the performance of the radar. If the radar is used in S band range of frequencies or lower, the presence of water molecules in air (due to fog, rain, clouds) will affect the performance of the radar through a phenomenon known as molecular dispersion.”The expert said that the clouds and rain will affect the signal and will lead to a “poor signal to noise ratio”, hence creating a disadvantageous situation for the radar which will face difficulties in picking up the radio signals.During situations when the sky is cloudy and there is rain, the signal could be optimized and molecular dispersion can be reduced using circular polarisation of the signals, the expert explains. However, the radar functioning will still be not up to the mark and will underperform. The expert concluded the statement by saying that there was nothing wrong with what PM Modi had said.Debates were sparked across all platforms when PM Modi, in an interview with The News Nation, said that prior to the Balakot airstrike he suggested the clouds and rain in the region could be useful for the India Air Force flights to escape Pakistan’s radars.According to the transcript of the interview, “The weather was not good on the day of airstrikes. There was a thought that crept in the minds of the experts that day of the strike should be changed. However, I suggested that the clouds can actually help our planes escape the radars.”Many called him out for his comments and how he could overrule those with expert knowledge on the matter and he was criticised for his “raw wisdom”.
